ONE NIGHT....7.5
Donna came to, to find a woman holding my hand, and a crowd of people around me. I tried to get up and the woman quickly told me not to try to move because I hit my head pretty hard. I reach up and touch my head to find a lump the size of a key lime. I grimace, since just the slightest touch cause me pain. I hear more voices as the EMS came through the crowd with a stretcher. “You did not have to call an ambulance, I’m fine” “No you are not fine you have been unconscious for 3 minutes. By the way my name is Susan, I’m a nurse. I was in the isle right behind you and I saw you fall. Thank God I was too.” The paramedics quickly got down beside me and started asking me all types of questions. They pick me up and put me on the stretcher, and strap me down. Then off I go into an ambulance. My head is pounding, and the sirens make me feel as if it is going to explode. It seems like it is take forever to get to the hospital, but I knows the nearest hospital is less than five miles away Just when I thinks that they must be going to another hospital, they come to a stop and the door opens. They wheel me out and I go right into the emergency room. All of a sudden there is a nurse taking my blood pressure, my pulse, and asking me what my name is. I tell them my name is Donna Brooks. Then in comes the doctor. They ask me if I want to have anyone contacted. I tell her my emergency card is in my wallet in my purse. She gets it and leaves to make phone calls. “Hi I’m Dr. McAlister.” “I see hear that you had a fall in the supermarket. Is this the first time this has happened?” “Yes it is doctor, but its nothing really, I missed breakfast and hadn’t had lunch so I got a little dizzy, and that’s all. There is no need for all this.” “Well has this happened before when you missed a meal?” “No this has never happened before.” “Ok well I'll tell the nurse to run some test, just to be on the safe side.” “Doctor seriously that is not necessary, really.” “Well then just humor me Mrs. Brooks” “Donna, please call me donna.” He pats my leg then leaves the room. I see him stop the nurse and tell her something. She nods her head and walks away. Just then the nurse who helped me at the supermarket walked into my room. “Hi Mrs. Brooks I was told you were in here.” “How are you feeling?” “You work here?” “Yes I do.” “Oh yeah, that’s right, you told me you were a nurse.” “The doctor ordered some test for you, to see if you don’t have a concussion.” “He also ordered some blood test as well.” “Your family as well as your office have been notified, and should be here shortly.” “I’m going to take some blood and we are going to make you all better.” I opened my mouth to protest but she put her hand up and stopped me before I could get one word out. “I don’t’ want to hear it, we are just going to check you out, and if nothing is wrong as you say isn’t then you will go home.” “So until then just sit tight.”
Back at Jason’s office….
“Good afternoon, Jason Brooks office, this is Vanessa how may I help you?” “Hello, may I speak to Mr. Brooks please?” “May I ask who is calling?” “This is Nurse Johnson calling from St. Luke’s Hospital.” “I am calling about his wife Mrs. Donna Brooks; she was brought in a little while ago.” “Oh my god, please hold one moment.” Vanessa buzzes Jason in his office. “Mr. Brooks you have a call on line 3.” “Take a message please Vanessa.” “It’s St. Luke's hospital calling about Donna; they say that she is there.” Jason looks at Brandon, and then rushes around his desk to get the phone. Had anyone else been in the office they would have wondered why Brandon looked just as worried if not more so than Jason. “Hello this is Jason brooks.” “What’s going on is my wife ok?” “What happened to her is she hurt.” “Mr., Brooks please calm down she is fine.” “She fainted while at the supermarket.” “She’s awake, and lucid.” “She is talking. We are just going to run a few test to make sure that all is well. “Ok well I’m on my way there right now.” “She is in the emergency room.” “I’m Nurse Johnson, you can ask for me when you get here and I will take you too her.” “Ok I’ll be there in 20 minutes.” Jason quickly hangs up the phone. He buzzes Vanessa and tells her to hold all his calls and to cancel, and reschedule all meetings. He will be out of the office for the rest of the week. He grabs his jacket and heads for the door, and he notices Brandon right on his heels. “Where are you going?” “Hell man I’m going with you.” “Its ok man, I’ll be fine.” “I’m not going to take no for an answer.” “I need to make sure she is ok.” “What?” “I mean she is my friend too, as much as she hates me, but I care for her just as much as I care for you.” “Alright man lets go.” “Hey Jason, we’ll take my car its faster.”
